Print labels and use QR scans

Every item and every tub has a scan code that doesn't change, so a label you print today still works after the stock moves. The QR code on the label opens that item or tub in Deathpile.

Choose your printer​

Deathpile lays labels out for three kinds of stock:

  • Brother 62 mm roll (DK-22205 paper or DK-22212 film). One roll does both: item labels come out 29 mm long and tub labels 100 mm long.
  • Dymo 11354 (57 × 32 mm multi-purpose labels).
  • Avery L7160 (A4 sheets of 21 labels, 63.5 × 38.1 mm) for an ordinary office printer.

Set it in Settings > Labels. The choice is saved on the device you're using, not your account, because it follows the printer that's plugged in there. A second computer or a phone keeps its own choice.

If tubs live somewhere hot, like a shed or a garage roof space, the Brother film roll lasts longer than paper.

Print dialogs like to shrink things to fit, and a shrunk QR code scans badly. Before a big batch:

  1. Open Settings > Labels and choose Print a test label.
  2. Print it at 100% or Actual size. Turn off any "fit to page" or "scale" option.
  3. Measure the ruler on the printed label. It should be exactly 50 mm.

If it's short, the print dialog is still scaling it. If your printer's own settings ask for a label or paper size, pick the one that matches the labels you've loaded and try again.

  1. Open Labels.
  2. Search if you need to, then tick the stock and tubs you want labelled.
  3. Choose Preview the ticked labels. The previews are drawn at real proportions for your printer.
  4. On an Avery sheet you've already used, choose where to start. Deathpile leaves the used labels blank and starts on the next free one.
  5. Choose Open labels to print (the button shows how many). The labels open as a PDF sized to the label, in a new tab.
  6. Print at 100% or Actual size, then stick each label on the matching item or tub.

Tub labels lead with the tub's short code in large type, so you can find the tub before you're close enough to scan it. Item labels lead with the item name, then quantity, size and tub.

Scan a label​

  1. Sign in to Deathpile on the phone or computer you're scanning with.
  2. Scan the QR code with the camera, or with a scanner that opens links.
  3. The item or tub opens in Deathpile. A tub opens its page on Space, with what's in it and how much room it has left, and Move next to each item.

The QR code holds a short link, like DEATHPILE.IO/S/DP-S-… for a tub or DEATHPILE.IO/I/DP-I-… for an item. The short form keeps the code small and quick to scan. Labels printed before the short links still work.

A scan only opens stock in a workspace you belong to. Someone who picks up one of your tubs gets a sign-in page, not a look at what's inside.

If a code opens the wrong thing, stop and replace the label before you carry on.

When you're putting stock away on Space, Scan a tub instead reads a tub's label to choose it, so the tub you scanned is the tub it's recorded in. You can also type the code painted on the tub, like GARTB1.

Scan-confirmed picking​

  1. Add items to the pick list from Stock.
  2. Open Scan pick.
  3. Scan the item or tub label it asks for.
  4. Confirm only once the item is in your hand.

Camera scanning, typing the code in and a scanner gun all work. The browser only asks for camera permission if you use the camera.
